In the past on this blog I have pointed toward what I thought is/was the direction of “disclosure”. Now I am seeing a provocative new direction becoming widespread regarding contact with possible extraterrestrials. This is not entirely new, but the sudden widespread proliferation of these ideas on two entirely different fronts is to me a sign of things to come, a Zeitgeist if you will.

The two fronts are a.) the edge science community and b.) the ufology/experiencer community.

At a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Jose (February 2015), Dr. Seth Shostak of SETI, expressed the opinion that the time has come to begin the proactive search for contact with extraterrestrials. Since 1960 (first incarnation) SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) has pointed an array of radio telescopes at the heavens in hopes of discovering a radio signal from another civilization in space. There have only been minor results. The criticism of this method is simply that the “radio age” on Earth has been short, beginning in the 2oth Century and tapering off in the 21st Century, so why radio waves? See Stanton Friedman’s argument here.

Shostak believes that we should attempt to send the contents of the Internet out toward “goldilocks” exoplanets that are being discovered currently. The assumption here is that these planets are most likely to harbor technologically advanced beings. (Forgive me, I digress here to multiple daydreams of gelatinous squid-like aliens reading my blog [and others], watching multiple cat videos, and seeing accounts of humans murdering one another and destroying their only environment.) This does not account for non-carbon based life forms that may exist and assumes a similar path of evolution. But that is a subject for another post.

Others at the meeting of AAAS disagree, notably author David Brin who said, “The arrogance of shouting into the cosmos without any proper risk assessment defies belief. It is a course that would put our grandchildren at risk.” This harkens back to famed physicist Stephen Hawking’s 2010 warning: “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans…We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.”  Hawking thinks that it is quite rational to expect that intelligent life exists elsewhere. I see here a paradigm shift in the scientific community from what I was taught (but didn’t ever accept) in school several decades ago; that no life was to be expected in Space, Space was a big dead void and there was no sign of planets around other stars.

On to the ufological/experiencer community. OK, not all ufologists are experiencers and not all experiencers are ufologists so don’t sue me for lumping the two groups together, think of it as a Venn diagram. 🙂

A couple of years ago I received an email from a like-minded friend. It was a “forward” from a group which promoted, on some level, the idea of an extraterrestrial presence on Earth. In short, it asked people to mentally request that these beings make open contact with Earthlings. It purported that if enough Earthlings telepathically assented to “contact” then these beings would make themselves known on Earth. At the time I remember questioning who was the group of humans and who were these aliens with whom they thought they were in contact. That being said, I did reason that if a large percentage of experiencers, myself included, reported that the beings communicated to them telepathically, that the idea of sending up a group message was not preposterous at all. But I thought, better to know precisely with whom you are communicating!

Fast forward to the very recent past (last week). A member of an email interest group to which I belong, discovered an interesting post on author Richard Bach’s blog. I invite you to follow the link. In short the famed Jonathan Livingston Seagull author received a similar exhortation to telepathically say “yes” to what purports to be an extraterrestrial offer of help to the denizens of Planet Earth. He enthusiastically says “Yes.” I wrote a comment on his blogpost:

Truth be known I have been waiting for such a message. I meditated on it earlier today and then got an email sending me to this site. About two years ago I received a similar message from another source and I whole-heartedly requested contact. I would like other beings visiting Earth to make themselves known. Since childhood I have had occasional visits from a tall golden being who self identified as from another world. My only objection or question to this post is the placing of humanity on top of our Earth’s creation. Are not Earth’s other animals and plants as valuable or more valuable than humans? Have humans not desecrated the Earth’s resources and allowed themselves to overpopulate. Sadly I fear humans have engineered the end of the Age of Mammals and engendered the rise of the Age of Insects, no meteor needed! My rational self says that perhaps this is one of the last refuges of a dying species to look for salvation from without, nonetheless on the chance that this is true (and I have ample evidence that life exists beyond the Big Blue Marble) I say a resounding “YES”!

I was thrilled to find an answer (partially directed at me) from the venerable Richard Bach, several comments below mine. Yes, dear reader, you will have to follow the link above to Bach’s blog to read the full story and his response.

For the opposing point of view, there is Whitley Strieber, certainly America’s most famous contactee, who on his podcast “Dreamland” quite recently reported that his late uncle, Brigadier General Arthur E. Exon, indicated to him that the reason for government secrecy on the existence of the extraterrestrial presence, was that it was like a door that once opened, could not be closed. As soon as a large enough group believed that these beings were here, they would in fact be here, and there would be no getting rid of them EVER! It is reminiscent of the exhortation: whatever you do, don’t think of a red wall!!! This in fact is a compelling explanation for the reason for government secrecy on UFOs and their occupants.

We are left with a lot of questions: Do such beings exist? (I lean towards a “yes” on this one.) Are they extraterrestrial or simply discarnate entities or both? Is it safe to communicate? Have “they” been lying to us, or do we simply mis-perceive the message?

This is all about a trend I am noticing which may change our collective Weltanshauung. Please comment on this blog if you have an opinion on these ideas.

02/20/15 UPDATE: Leslie Kean on John Podesta and disclosure of a sort. Coming so soon after the above mentioned news, it seems to be part of the shift.
